Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or candy canes

Instructions

  • Prepare the base: In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to break up any clumps.
  • Combine ingredients in the crockpot: Add the milk, heavy cream, and dry cocoa mixture to the crockpot. Whisk until well combined.
  • Cook: Cover and cook on low for 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Add vanilla: After 2 hours, stir in the vanilla extract. Mix well and let the hot chocolate sit for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Serve: Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs and garnish with your favorite toppings.

Notes

Using a whisk to combine the cocoa powder with the milk ensures a smooth texture.
Stir the mixture every 30-40 minutes to prevent cocoa from settling at the bottom. If you prefer a sweeter drink, adjust the sugar to taste.
For an extra chocolatey twist, add ½ cup of chocolate chips during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
