Ingredients

  • 4 cups unsweetened oat milk
  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (or adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Optional toppings: dairy-free whipped cream, vegan marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or cinnamon

Instructions

  • Combine dry ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to remove any clumps.
  • Heat oat milk: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm the oat milk until it starts to steam (do not boil).
  • Mix: Gradually whisk the cocoa mixture into the oat milk until smooth.
  • Simmer: Reduce heat to low and let the hot chocolate simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add vanilla: Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Serve: Pour into mugs and garnish with your favorite toppings.

Notes

For an extra creamy hot chocolate, use barista-style oat milk, which is specially formulated for frothing.
Stirring regularly ensures a smooth consistency. If you like a richer flavor, add 2 tablespoons of melted dairy-free chocolate chips during the simmering stage.
